Mobile leather repair means we come to you, assess the damage in the room where the furniture lives, and carry out the work there and then. For most of the jobs we are asked about, from cat scratches on an arm to a cracked seat cushion or a scuff on a car seat, that is exactly how it happens. Your sofa never leaves the house. Our leather repair and restoration service covers Essex, London and the surrounding area, and the majority of it is done at customers’ homes and workplaces.
What mobile leather repair actually involves
People sometimes picture a van full of sofas being driven off to a factory. The reality is a lot simpler. Jon, our founder, arrives with everything needed for the job: cleaners, fillers, colour-matching pigments, sealants, lacquers, stitching equipment and the lamps and tools to do it properly. He works in your living room, conservatory, office or driveway, protects the surrounding floor and furniture, and leaves the piece ready to use once the finish has cured.
The main advantage is obvious. Nobody wants to be without their sofa for a fortnight, and nobody wants to pay for a three-seater to be collected and returned. A mobile visit avoids all of that. It also lets us see the furniture in its normal light and surroundings, which makes colour matching more reliable. A cream sofa looks different under a conservatory roof in Rayleigh than it does under workshop lights.
Repairs we routinely do at your home
The list is longer than most people expect. Over 26 years Jon has refined the methods so that almost every common problem can be dealt with on site.
- Scuffs, scratches and pet damage on arms, seat fronts and backs.
- Cracked, worn or faded seat cushions and headrests, including full recolouring of a sofa to bring it back to one even colour.
- Small and medium splits and tears, sub-patched from behind, filled and colour matched.
- Split seams and failed stitching on sofas, chairs and recliners.
- Ink, dye transfer, grease and food stains.
- Cigarette and candle burns.
- Car seat bolsters, driver’s seat wear and cracked leather on steering wheels and door cards.
A typical afternoon might be a burn on a chesterfield in Brentwood, followed by a dog-scratched armchair in Billericay. Some jobs take an hour. A full recolour of a large corner sofa is a full day, occasionally two.
When the work needs to go to the workshop
Mobile does not mean everything. Some work simply cannot be done well in a living room, and we would rather tell you that up front than do a poor job on your carpet.
Reupholstery, where the old leather is stripped and replaced, is workshop work. So is replacing a whole panel, because the new leather has to be cut, sewn and fitted properly. Very badly damaged pieces that need the finish stripped back completely are usually better in the workshop too, where the leather can be worked on from every angle and left to cure in controlled conditions. In those cases we collect, restore and return, and we will tell you roughly how long you will be without the piece before we start.
Sometimes a job starts as a mobile visit and becomes a workshop one. Jon arrives to look at a torn cushion, finds that the leather on the entire seat has gone papery, and recommends a new panel instead. You will always be told before anything changes, and the quote will be adjusted rather than sprung on you at the end.
What happens on a mobile leather repair visit
The process is much the same wherever we go, from a flat in east London to a farmhouse outside Chelmsford.
Before the visit
You send us a couple of photos and a rough location, we give you a quote, and we agree a date. If the damage needs a particular colour or material we will sort that out beforehand so the visit is not wasted. It helps if we know what the sofa is and where it came from, because leathers from different manufacturers behave differently.
On the day
Jon assesses the piece in person, confirms the plan with you, and sets up. Floors and nearby furniture are protected. The damaged area is cleaned properly first, because no repair holds on a dirty surface. Then the actual repair is done: bonding and sub-patching a tear, re-stitching a seam, filling and levelling a crack, or building up new colour in thin layers until it matches the original. Sealant and lacquer go on last to protect the repair and match the sheen of the surrounding leather.
After the repair
Many repairs can be used again within hours once the finish has cured, and we will give you clear guidance on that before we leave. There is no strong chemical smell lingering in the house, and nothing to do afterwards except enjoy the furniture.
Why “mobile” does not mean “quick fix”
There is a difference between a mobile repair done by an experienced restorer and a mobile “repair kit” bought online. The kits promise the same result from a tube of filler and a little pot of colour, and the results are usually worse than the original damage. The filler cracks, the colour is a shade off and sits on the surface like paint, and the leather around it is often damaged by the solvent in the kit. Jon spends a fair amount of his time removing failed kit repairs before he can start on the real one.
A professional mobile repair uses the same materials and methods as the workshop. The only difference is where it happens. The finish is colour matched to your leather, not picked from a chart of six shades, and the sealants are proper upholstery products that flex with the hide. Making the most of a home visit
A little preparation makes the visit smoother. If you can, clear a bit of space around the piece so Jon can get to the back and sides, and pull it away from the wall if it is a sofa. Good daylight helps with colour matching, so opening the curtains is better than switching on a lamp. If you have pets, it is worth keeping them in another room while the finish is going on, partly for their sake and partly because a wagging tail on wet lacquer is not something either of us wants.
It also helps to point out everything that bothers you, not just the thing you booked us for. If we are already at your house in Thurrock to repair a tear, it is often possible to deal with a scuff on the other arm or a faded headrest at the same time for a modest addition, rather than booking a second visit later on. We would rather look at it all while we are there.

We are based in South Benfleet and work throughout Essex and London. Southend-on-Sea, Leigh-on-Sea, Canvey Island, Basildon, Thurrock, Brentwood, Romford, Chelmsford, Colchester and the whole of east and central London are regular destinations, and we go further afield for larger jobs. We do not operate nationwide and we do not offer a postal service, because good leather work needs to be done in person.

Mobile work is not only for family sofas. We regularly visit hotels, restaurants, offices, dental practices and showrooms to repair leather seating in place, often outside opening hours so the business is not disrupted. Landlords and letting agents use us to sort out damage between tenancies without replacing the furniture. And a large part of Jon’s week is spent in driveways and car parks repairing driver’s seat bolsters, worn steering wheels and cracked seats on commuter cars that have done a hundred thousand miles up and down the A13.
