Leather sofa colour coming off is one of the most common problems we are asked about, and in most cases it is good news rather than bad. What you are seeing is the pigmented finish on top of the leather wearing away, not the leather itself falling apart. The hide underneath is usually sound, which means the colour can be rebuilt properly and the sofa can go on for years. The exceptions are bonded and faux leathers, which we cover further down, and those are a different story.

What is actually coming off
Most leather sofas sold in the UK are “pigmented” or “protected” leather. The hide is tanned, then a layer of coloured pigment is applied to the surface, and then a clear top coat is added over that to seal it. When people say the colour is coming off, they usually mean one of two things.
The first is that the top coat has worn through and the pigment beneath is now polishing away, leaving a paler, slightly rough patch. The second is that the finish is flaking or peeling in flakes, which looks more alarming and often means something has attacked the finish rather than simply worn it.
Either way, if the leather beneath is intact and flexible, the fix is a recolour. If you press the pale area and it feels dry and crisp, or you can see a fabric weave through it, keep reading, because that changes things.
Why leather sofa colour coming off is so common
Simple wear in the places you sit
Colour goes first on the seat cushion you always use, the front edge where the backs of your legs rub, and the top of the arm you rest your hand on. That is friction, thousands of times a week, and no finish lasts forever under it. Jeans with rivets and studs speed it up. So do dogs who jump on and off the same corner.
Body oils, hair products and sweat
Headrests and arms darken first and then go pale. Skin oils and hair products soak into the finish and soften it, so it wears far faster than the rest of the sofa. Cleaning products that were never meant for leather
This is the big one for peeling and flaking. Baby wipes, antibacterial sprays, washing-up liquid, cream cleaners and most “leather wipes” from the supermarket contain solvents or alkalis that break down the top coat. The sofa looks cleaner for a week, then the finish starts to lift in patches. We see this constantly on sofas in homes with young children where wipes are always to hand.
Sun, radiators and conservatories
UV light fades pigment and dries out the finish, so a sofa under a window in Southend or in a conservatory in Billericay will lose colour on the side facing the light. A sofa pushed against a radiator dries out from the back, and the finish on that arm cracks and lifts.
A poor finish from the factory
Sometimes the sofa simply was not finished well. If the colour is coming off a sofa that is only a year or two old and has been treated properly, that may be a manufacturing fault rather than wear. Citizens Advice explains your rights on faulty goods, and it is worth checking those before you pay for a repair on a new sofa.
What makes it worse
The instinct when colour is coming off is to put some colour back on. Leather dye pens, aerosol dyes, shoe polish and “leather paint” from the internet all look like the obvious answer. The problem is that they go on top of a finish that is already failing, so they wear off in weeks, and they wear off unevenly, which leaves the sofa looking blotchy in three colours instead of two.
Conditioners and balms are the other common move. On a sofa where the finish is worn through, they soak straight into the exposed leather and darken it, so the pale patch becomes a dark greasy patch. That oil then has to be drawn out before any professional recolour will bond, which adds time and cost.
Scrubbing at the flaking bits to “tidy them up” removes more finish and enlarges the area. If you have a leather sofa colour coming off problem, the most useful thing you can do is stop cleaning it, keep it away from heat and light, and send us a photo.
How professional recolouring puts it right
The job begins with a close look at the leather, because Jon needs to know what type it is, how far the wear has gone and whether anything has been applied to it. Then the sofa is deep cleaned to remove every trace of polish, conditioner, wipes residue and body oil. This is the stage that home attempts skip and it is why they fail.
Any loose or flaking finish is removed and the surface is prepared so the new colour has something to grip. Cracks and scuffs are filled and smoothed. Colour is then mixed to match the sofa, not picked from a chart, and applied in thin layers. On a sofa with wear in several places, the whole panel or the whole sofa is usually recoloured so there is no visible join, and the shade can be refreshed or even changed while we are at it.
The finish is sealed with a protective top coat that gives the right level of sheen and stands up to daily use. Done properly, a recoloured sofa does not look painted. It looks like the sofa did when it was new, with the grain still visible.

How long it takes and what affects the price
A single worn seat cushion or one arm can often be recoloured in your home in a few hours. A full three-piece suite is a longer job, sometimes over two visits so each stage can cure properly. Most work is done in your living room with dust sheets down, though loose cushions occasionally come back to our workshop in South Benfleet if they need a lot of preparation.
The price depends on how much of the sofa needs doing, the size and style of it (a deep-buttoned chesterfield takes longer than a plain modern design), whether the colour is being matched or changed, and how much old product has to be removed first. A sofa that has had olive oil and dye pens on it costs more to put right than one that has simply worn. Every job is quoted individually, and quotes are free.
When recolouring is not the answer
Bonded leather, “faux leather”, PU and bicast leather are a different material altogether. They have a thin plastic coating on a fabric or fibre backing, and when the colour comes off it is actually the plastic layer peeling. That cannot be recoloured in any lasting way because there is nothing sound to bond to. If you can see a fabric weave under the peeling patches, that is what you have, and the honest advice is to replace the affected panels or the sofa.
Real leather that has been so badly dried out that it is cracking right through, rather than just on the surface, may also be past recolouring. Jon will tell you plainly if that is the case. Nobody wants to pay for work that will not last, and we would rather lose a job than do one we cannot stand behind.
For the great majority of sofas, though, leather sofa colour coming off is a cosmetic problem with a proper solution, and it usually costs a small fraction of a replacement sofa of the same quality.
