Getting a leather repair quote from us takes about five minutes of your time and, in most cases, a couple of photos from your phone. There is no call centre, no sales visit and no charge: the pictures go to Jon, our founder, who has been repairing leather for 26 years and can usually tell from a photo what the job involves, how long it will take and roughly what it will cost. This post explains what to send, how we price work and what to expect once you have said yes, so you know exactly what you are getting into. Why We Quote From Photos First
Some trades need to see the job in person before they can say anything useful. Leather is not one of them, at least not at the first stage. The type of leather, the kind of damage and its size are all visible in a decent photo, and those three things decide most of the price. Quoting from photos means you get an answer the same day or the next, rather than waiting a week for someone to come round, and it means we are not driving from South Benfleet to Colchester to look at a scuff that could have been priced in a text message.
For larger jobs, full recolouring, reupholstery or anything where the frame or cushions are involved, Jon may ask a few more questions or arrange to see the piece. But even then, the photos come first and the visit is to confirm, not to start from scratch.
The Photos That Get You an Accurate Leather Repair Quote
You do not need a good camera. You do need daylight. Turn the room lights off if you can, open the curtains and take the photos with the window behind you rather than behind the sofa.
Three photos are usually enough:
- The damage, close up. Near enough that we can see the texture of the leather and the edges of the tear, scratch, crack or stain. Put a coin or a ruler next to it if you can, so we can judge the size.
- The damage in context. Step back so we can see which part of the sofa or chair it is on: seat cushion, arm, back, seat front. This tells us how the panel is constructed and how much surrounding leather will need blending.
- The whole piece. The entire sofa, chair or car seat from the front. This shows us the style, the colour, the sheen and whether there is other wear you may not have mentioned.
If you know the brand or have the label under a cushion, a photo of that helps too. And if you have already tried something on the damage (a wipe, a kit, a polish), please tell us. It is not a problem, but it changes what we need to do and we would rather know.

What Decides the Price
We do not have a price list, because two tears that look identical in a photo can be very different jobs. Here is what Jon is weighing up when he looks at your pictures.
Type of leather
Pigmented leather, which is most modern sofas, is the most straightforward to repair and recolour. Aniline, semi-aniline and waxed leathers need different products and more careful colour work. Bonded and bicast leather often cannot be repaired at all, and we will tell you that rather than quote.
Size and type of damage
A single scratch on an arm is a small, localised job. A seat cushion that has cracked all over needs the whole panel cleaned, filled and recoloured. A dog-chewed corner may need a replacement panel. The more area we have to work on, and the more the repair goes into the structure rather than the surface, the longer it takes.
Colour matching
Black and dark brown are quick to match. An unusual grey-green Italian sofa that has faded unevenly over ten years takes longer to get right, and getting it right is the whole job. Antiqued and two-tone finishes take longer still.
Number of panels and pieces
Repairing one arm is one price. Recolouring a three-seater, a two-seater and an armchair is a different scale of work, though the price per piece comes down when we are set up for a full day.
Where the work is done
Most repairs, cleaning and recolouring happen at your home in Essex or London. Reupholstery, panel replacement and some structural work come into the workshop, which means collection and delivery. Access matters too: a sofa on the fourth floor of a block in east London with no lift is a different proposition from one in a bungalow in Rayleigh.
Urgency
If you are selling the house, have family arriving or a tenancy inspection coming up, tell us. We will do our best to fit you in, but we do not promise same-day work and we will not rush a job to the point where it suffers.
Rough Guidance on Cost
People understandably want a ballpark before they send photos, so here it is, with the caveat that every job is quoted individually, and quotes are free.
Small, localised repairs (a scratch, a small tear, a scuffed arm, a single stain) are the least expensive work we do, and they typically come in well under the cost of a new seat cushion from a decent retailer. Restoring a whole worn area, such as recolouring both arms and the seat cushions of a three-seater, is a mid-sized job. Full recolouring of a suite or reupholstery in new leather is the largest category, and even then it is usually a fraction of what you would pay to replace a good quality sofa with something equivalent.
Jon will always tell you where your job sits and, if a repair would cost more than it is worth, he will say so. Ours are written, itemised where it helps, and do not change once you have accepted unless we find something we could not have seen in the photos, in which case we talk to you before doing anything.
How Long Leather Repairs Take
Timings vary with the job, but the general pattern is straightforward. Most localised repairs and cleaning are completed in a single visit, and the leather is usable once the finish has cured, often the same evening or the next day. Recolouring a full sofa is usually a day or two on site depending on size and condition. Replacement panels and reupholstery depend on sourcing the right hide, so we will give you a timescale when we quote rather than guess.

What Happens After You Accept
Once you are happy with the quote, we agree a date. On the day, Jon arrives with everything needed, protects your floor and surrounding furniture, and works through the job as described: assessment, cleaning, repair, colour matching, finishing. You can watch or leave him to it. He will show you the result in daylight before he packs up, and tell you how to look after the leather so the repair lasts.

Things We Will Not Quote For
We would rather lose a job than do a bad one. We will not quote to patch over peeling bonded leather, because it will fail. We will not quote for a repair on a sofa where the frame has gone, without first talking to you about whether it is worth it.
