“My leather sofa has faded in the sun… is it too far gone?”
A Recent Leather Restoration: Lenleys Sofa Set (2-Seater + 3-Seater)
In this blog, I want to share a recent transformation that truly captures the beauty of multi-layer leather colour restoration.
This classic two-seater and three-seater leather suite from Lenleys had gracefully aged over 16 years, but sunlight through large windows had taken a toll. The vibrant burgundy, chestnut and deep red-brown tones had faded dramatically, leaving a patchy, washed-out finish that no longer reflected the quality of the piece.
But instead of throwing it away, the client chose restoration.
Understanding Sun-Faded Leather
If your leather furniture sits near windows or in a bright conservatory, it’s highly susceptible to UV light damage. This exposure breaks down the surface pigments and wax layers over time, especially in aniline leather, which has minimal surface protection by design.
Signs of sun-bleached leather include:
- Uneven fading
- Loss of natural colour depth
- Cracked or dull wax finishes
- “Chalky” appearance
My Six-Stage Restoration System
Every restoration I carry out is unique, but the process is grounded in a careful 6-product system I’ve developed over years of hands-on work and training.
Here’s how I approached this Lenleys suite:
- Wax Removal – The original wax layer was carefully stripped back to expose the faded leather.
- Deep Cleaning & Prep – Essential to remove embedded oils and contaminants.
- Reconditioning the Leather – A specialist protein-based product was applied to prepare the surface.
- Colour Rebuild (Layer by Layer) – Using a blend of pigment-based coatings, I reintroduced the rich multi-tone finish, working in harmony with the leather’s natural character.
- Tinting & Shading – Carefully added undertones of burgundy, chestnut, and red-brown to mimic the original aniline depth.
- Final Wax Finish – A high-gloss wax layer was reapplied to seal and protect, tailored to match the original sheen.
A Finish That Reacts Beautifully to Light
One of the joys of restoring high-end leather is seeing how it responds to light.
📷 Before Restoration – A clear view of faded burgundy and red tones washed out by UV exposure.
📷 After Restoration (Artificial Light) – The revived tones bring a warmth and richness back to the room.
📷 After Restoration (Natural Light) – Taken on a summer evening, the subtle tonal shifts shine through—revealing that beautiful depth only found in layered finishes.
This wasn’t a fast process—and nor should it be. Getting results like these takes care, patience, and product precision.
Custom Wax Finishes
Whether your taste leans toward a high-gloss, satin, or soft matte look, the final wax coat can be tailored to suit your style. The Lenleys suite was originally finished in high gloss, so we honoured that, but the choice is always yours.
Is Your Leather Sofa Worth Saving
Absolutely—if it’s well-built and structurally sound. Replacing it might cost thousands, and you lose the character and quality of the original. With the right techniques, sun-faded leather can be completely transformed while retaining the unique feel of aged hide.
