Chesterfield Sofa Repair

Chesterfield style furniture can consist of a base coat colour and a darker top coloured coat

This top coating isn’t always as durable as the base colour coat and can be prone to come adrift resulting in a patchy appearance.

Many of the Chesterfield makers will use a “rub off” leather. The leather is designed as the name suggests – the darker top colour coat wears off quite easily exposing the light base coat colour. This is (supposedly) to give the Chesterfield character.

At some stage in the ageing process of such pieces, many do not like this effect and contact The leather expert to restore or age further.

Alternatively, some antique Chesterfields colour effects consist of a mixture of dyes and pigments to create a richer deeper finish.
Chesterfield restoring such leather pieces, recreating this natural look of the leathers colour tones that has been crafted in the decades of experience gained through working with exceptionally high quality natural materials.

We approach every damaged piece individually, some leather panels require special attention, recreating the original finish and a beautifully toned leather patina is created by hand, using a method unique to The Leather Expert.

Combining leather dyes and pigments allows our unique restoration process to achieve results that are simply impossible using conventional methods.

With our expertise implementing traditional 19th century techniques and the latest development in products sourced globally, stunning results are possible.

Full-aniline leather, which is the hide’s most organic state can wear revealing heavy scarring and blemishes in areas of frequent use,
such as the seat and arms of the furniture.

These hides are uniquely coloured, appearing to have many different shades and tones.

Aniline leather furniture can also be prone to dry out, lose suppleness, the colour can fade and appear very much lighter.

This natural finishing of aniline leather, as beautiful as it appears does come at a cost. The practicality of such hides are prone to fading and bleaching, the largest factor to this discolouration being UV light.

Leather sofas and chairs when placed directly in front of windows can be affected to such a degree that the pigment is completely bleached out, with no sign of colour!

Every restoration has unique requirements and care is taken to fulfil the customers vision.

In some cases it’s paramount to retain the character of the piece as the item may hold great sentimental value. Cases such as these require
a sympathetic restoration.

Whether this be an antique finish or trendy vibrant colour change!

Chesterfield restoration requires an artistic flare to achieve a specific look. Provide us with an example of a Chesterfield you like, we will replicate that colour to make a truly personal statement in style.
